This introductory essay highlights the growing recognition within the education and development field of its colonial, racialised, imperialist, and capitalist foundations. While Education in Emergencies (EiE) has only recently begun engaging with these critiques, efforts like the INEE’s 2020 acknowledgment of institutional racism marked a turning point. However, the authors argue that meaningful structural change in the EiE sector remains limited. They call for the EiE community to confront its historical and ongoing entanglements with race, empire, and capitalism, and invite forum contributors to explore what such a response might entail.
