A recent University of Auckland’s PhD study by Alex Pennycuick, under supervision of Professor Jay Marlowe and Dr Ritesh Shah, reveals that students from refugee backgrounds frequently feel a limited sense of belongingness at New Zealand universities. Conducted across multiple New Zealand universities, the study found that despite their high motivation, these students often experience campuses as “white spaces” where microaggressions and cultural invisibility undermine inclusion.
