You’re invited to an evocative workshop hosted by The Centre for Asia Pacific Refugee Studies (CAPRS) – Tāwharau Whakaumu — where poetry meets resistance, resilience, and environmental advocacy.
Join us as we explore the lyrical power of Pacific literature to challenge dominant climate narratives and amplify Indigenous knowledge.
Attendees will analyse and discuss a selection of poems from Tales, Poems and Songs from the Underwater World (2011) by Fijian-born New Zealand author Daren Kamali led by Dr. Pilar Royo-Grasa and Maria Ahmad
The main aim of the workshop is to identify and examine the literary strategies Kamali uses in his poetry to highlight the key role of Pacific Islanders’ indigenous cultural heritage and peoples for the pursuit of environmental protection and climate justice.
Together, we will discuss the ways in which these poems challenge neocolonial paternalistic and belittling views of climate-risk vulnerable Pacific islanders.
Friday 13 June 2025 | 12pm – 1:30pm NZST | Building 206, Room 215, 14A Symonds Street, University of Auckland City Campus, Auckland, New Zealand
Since this is a hybrid seminar, interested attendees are welcome to join in person or online.
