Since its formation in 2022, the New Zealand Refugee Advisory Panel (NZRAP) – co‑led by Immigration New Zealand and the Centre for Asia Pacific Refugee Studies – has amplified the voices of refugees to inform government policy in areas such as resettlement, legal processes, and mental health support. The panel’s first term delivered major wins, including adoption of its definition of “meaningful refugee participation” by the government, active involvement in the National Refugee Resettlement Forum, and contributions to pledges at the Global Refugee Forum in Geneva. Six new members have been added for the panel’s second term, bringing diverse leadership and lived experience to its work. Panel members emphasize that genuine refugee participation is fundamental—not symbolic—and essential for shaping effective, community-centered policies.
